Support Women in Marine Science!

Another graduate student at UNC - Chapel Hill's Institute of Marine Science, Mollie Yacano (twitter handle: @mollieyacano), and I have started an Eastern North Carolina Society for Women in Marine Science chapter! We are excited to partner with the only national organization (http://swmsmarinescience.com/) specifically committed to celebrating all women in marine science. ANYONE committed to the advancement of women in marine science is welcome to join. We initially wanted to start the organization as there are several marine labs in our area associated with universities located three hours away (UNC at Chapel Hill, Duke University, NC State University). As we stated in our initial mission statement:

We hope that this will end up serving as a support and professional development network for scientists remote from their campuses here in Eastern North Carolina, as we recognize that we miss out on a lot of the opportunities that may be available on our main campuses.

The turnout for our initial interest meeting was great! We had attendees from all three universities, NOAA, Division of Marine Fisheries, and more! There were lots of great suggestions and we are in the works of setting up our first events (including helping to properly dispose of fishing nets, which can be tricky as there is no reliable recycling system in place).

If you are interested in joining, please feel free to email me at sdonaher@live.unc.edu and join our facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/339215606935196/
